Judith Leiber: Eye-popping Bags

When I first eyed Judith Leiber's crystal embellished, hand-crafted bags some years back, like many others I was totally awe-struck. Though I can ill-afford these super-expensive bags, there is no reason that I cannot feast my senses and appreciate their aesthetic appeal and quirky shapes.

Statistics say that these bags have been to so many parties that probably you and many of us jointly have not attended. The whimsical shapes and magnificent craftsmanship of these bags have made them regulars at red carpet events with stars and celebrities. The stone encrusted bags in the shape of peacock, cat, dog, heart, owl, rose, rabbit, fish etc are crafted with meticulous detail and loaded with unmatched style.

You may love them or just hate them-- but you can't ignore them.

Maharaj Clutch

Budapest-born Judith had launched her line in 1963 and since then she has added splendid jewellery, belts, eye wear, key chains, pill boxes etc to her kitty. Interestingly, she has brought out Gnaesh and Maharaj clutches, eyeing a chunk of evolving Indian market.

Alpona On Fabric: Exquisite Kantha Embroidery

Alpona designs are a popular form of floral art that Bengali women put on the floor during festivals and weddings in India and Bangladesh. The designs made of rice flour paste are intricate and very unique. These elaborate patterns are also embroidered on fabrics by the women of Bengal, taking an ordinary piece from mundane to sublime.

Shamlu Dudheja is one such woman, who along with her daughter is designing resplendent pieces of work
on sarees, scarfs, dupattas, outfits and furnishings through a non-profit outfit SHE (Self Help Enterprise),   focussed on women's welfare in rural parts of India. It provides training and support to women, who produce exquisite Kantha pieces for global customers. The proceeds from the sale of these items are put back into the welfare, health and education of the women and their families.

Take a look and decide for yourself if these are any less exquisite than a Lalique or Lladro pieces! Pick from these saris, scarfs, salwar suits, tunics this diwali for an alluring and classy look. Do not miss the furnishing pieces below.
